English Lessons

Bilingual French/English School in London

Nursery and Primary open for all

Our Focus on English

La Petite Ecole Française

Pupils at PEF are given more hours of English lessons than the French curriculum requirement.

As a result, the school week comprises of 26 hours as opposed to the recommended 24 hours within the French curriculum.

All our English teachers are native speakers. They teach English grammar and literacy but also cultural aspects and topics within the French curriculum.

25% of teaching time is conducted in English, as we are responding to a greater demand from parents for their children to be bilingual. Due to the small English classes and excellent teaching most of the pupils who have been with the school since Maternelle leave in CM2 as bilingual students.

Maternelle section

Our English teacher for the Maternelle section, Marie, is a native English speaker and is employed full time at the school. In addition to the regular English lessons, she spends a full morning per week with each class. During these morning workshops the regular class teacher also speaks in English to the children.

The teachers work together to put in place programs covering logic, art and science (discovery of the world) and these sessions have turned out to be a great success. For example, the Moyenne section has done a project on the life-cycle of plants, which the children greatly enjoyed. During these classes, Marie takes digital photos and creates an ‘English Book’ for the children to take home and share with their families.

In the afternoons, Marie teaches English to groups of nine children at a time, twice a week. She works with them on their spoken English, reads stories and teaches them songs. The aim of the English class is to promote participation and for each child to express themselves confidently. In order to do this she uses her knowledge of the British programs as she has a diploma in Early Years Education. She also teaches ecology and sustainable development with the collaboration of her French colleagues. In addition to English lessons and workshops, the dance classes, music classes and sports lessons are conducted in English by teachers who are also native speakers.

Kind words from our parents

Testimonials

Parents and children alike love the school, and here are some of their thoughts.

Our two daughters Sophie (15) and Charlotte (10) have been pupils at la PEF from PS until the end of CM2, from September 2010 to July 2022.

We were part of the first few that saw the opening of the primary school and have always been delighted with the high level of education and teaching provided. La PEF is one of the truly bilingual schools in London with both English and French native speakers. The focus on the individual students is possible thanks to the relatively small classes at la PEF and this enables a smooth transition to the curriculum of the secondary school – in the case of our eldest Lycee CDG in section internationale.

Also given the extraordinary times we lived the last couple of years during the numerous lock downs, the PEF really stepped up to the challenge and were amongst the first schools in London to offer continuation of lessons online. With this important achievement during such formative years of our children, the PEF will remain with us in fond memory and we will always be delighted to recommend la PEF to future students.

One of the best schools in London: education, management, teachers … Top quality.

I feel very blessed to have had my 3 children in this wonderful school for now 12 years. The small classes and attentive teachers combine to help children flourish, both academically and personally. The lovely and friendly atmosphere has also helped foster close and genuine friendships that will probably last my children for life.

Our sons have been with La Petite Ecole for the past 5 and 2 years respectively. We’ve always been extremely happy with the standard of education and learning.

With smaller class sizes, the school offers the best care and attention to the children’s individual needs to learn and grow. There is a real sense of community in the school and after these fundamental years in their development, the children from the same age group become like a family, which is lovely to see.

As a Franco-British family, we truly value that whilst being a French school following the French curriculum, there are also positive influences from the English system from empathy to a positive approach and encouragement to learning.

Primaire (CE1 to CM2)

Encouraging development

Our English teacher Tavishi Parikh – who works with the CE1 to CM2 classes – is a native English speaker and is also fluent in Gujarati. She works at the school three days a week. Tavishi has over 9 years of teaching experience working in English schools, has a Certificate in Therapeutic Play and has also taught English as an additional language to children in South East Asia.

During her time at the school, Tavishi works closely with the class teachers putting provisions in place to make sure all the topics are being covered. She also refers to the English National Curriculum to plan her lessons, thus making sure that all children are working at the correct level. Furthermore, her lessons are differentiated so that every child is achieving their full potential.

During her lessons, Tavishi encourages the children to only speak English with her and their peers. She uses Phonics as a way to get the children to read and write. The class watches Newsround regularly to generate topics for discussions. Tavishi works on both fiction and non-fiction writing and often links the topics with the French teacher. Tavishi uses a wide range of materials to interest the children; these include books, posters and videos.
